Jedi Outcast is a continuation of the Star Wars Jedi Knight franchise, which tells the story of a mercenary named Kyle Katarn and his faithful partner Jan Ors. The events of Jedi Outcast take place a few years after the end of the sixth episode of the Star Wars original trilogy movies.

The Galactic Empire has lost control over most of its planets, and has been replaced by a newly formed government of the fledgling New Republic, which seeks to restore peace and justice to the galaxy. However, the remnants of the Old Empire are unwilling to acknowledge the former regime's downfall and are fighting to restore their previous dominance. Unwillingly, Kyle and Jan once again become active participants in the armed conflict between two powerful organizations.
